Architectural shingles carry better wind ratings and a longer service life than three-tab for a modest price difference, which is why they're on most replacements now. Three-tab still turns up constantly on repairs to older valley roofs.
Ventilation and flashing move the lifespan more than the product does. A roof with blocked soffits under a ridge vent cooks its own shingles from below, and no warranty covers what poor ventilation does to a deck. Flashing done with sealant instead of metal fails on schedule regardless of what's over it.
Matching an existing roof is close but rarely exact. Sun and weather change the color of installed shingles, so a repaired section on an older roof reads slightly different even with the same product from the same line.
