Wind rarely takes the whole roof. It breaks the seal on a few dozen shingles and leaves the rest looking fine.
Asphalt shingles hold down by a self-sealing adhesive strip that bonds in the sun. Wind breaks that seal, and once broken it does not re-bond. A shingle that got lifted and laid back down looks intact and is no longer fastened — the next storm takes it.
That's why wind damage shows up as a crease across the tab rather than a missing piece. Ridges, rakes, and the edges of the roof take it first because that's where uplift is strongest, and on the exposed hillside lots above the river it's stronger still.
Ridge caps are the other common casualty. They sit at the highest-pressure point on the roof, they're often the thinnest material up there, and once a cap tears the ridge vent underneath is open to weather.
